5 Benefits of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Over the past two decades, advancements in technology and technique have radically transformed and improved the experience and outcome of hair transplant surgery. Specifically, the dawn of the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method in 2004 ended the era of “hair plugs” and ushered in a new age in which transplants look more natural, leave less scarring, and involve far less inconvenience and recovery time than they did before. Coupled with the development of the advanced ARTAS System shortly thereafter, FUE has changed the game for hair restoration, making it more a more appealing option for an ever-increasing number of people dealing with hair loss.

Miami Hair Institute’s Dr. Paul Rose was one of the developers of the FUE technique. Dr. Rose, Dr. Bernard Nusbaum, and Dr. Aron Nusbaum Nusbaum have performed the procedure on thousands of patients since with exceptional results.

Here are the top five benefits of Follicular Unit Extraction:

1. It Is Minimally Invasive and Minimally Disruptive

Our surgeons perform FUE transplants as an outpatient procedure in our comfortable, welcoming offices using only local anesthesia. Patients arrive for their surgery in the morning and can go home later the same day.

2. It Provides Unmatched Precision

When performing an FUE transplant, we use the image-guided robotics of the ARTAS System, which provides unmatched precision in hair transplantation. The ARTAS procedure restores your hair by carefully and meticulously transplanting permanent hair from the back or side of the head into thinning areas, including the hairline.

We use the ARTAS System to digitally scan the scalp and identify hair in its natural groupings.High-resolution digital imaging provides crystal-clear detail of the donor area. We then carefully remove the selected follicles while most of your hair is left untouched and undamaged so that the donor area retains its natural appearance. We transplant the donor hair into thinning areas where it will then grow naturally, just as it did before.

3. It Involves Much Shorter Recovery Time

One of the most significant benefits of Follicular Unit Extraction is that healing and recovery tend to be quicker and involve fewer post-operative limitations than older hair transplant methods.

The day after your FUE procedure, we will want you to return to our offices to check and shampoo the transplanted areas. Beyond that, however, you should be able to return to work that day and resume all of your regular activities within a week to ten days.

4. It Leaves Behind Minimal and Barely Visible Scarring

In an FUE transplant, we remove follicular units from the scalp one by one. By doing so, we avoid the more visible and apparent linear scar often associated with older hair transplant techniques. Instead, scarring happens in a dot-like pattern that is virtually undetectable after healing and hair regrowth. This minimal scarring allows patients to wear their hair very short (but not totally shaven) after the transplant without any visible evidence that they underwent hair transplant surgery.

5. It Has a Higher Graft Survival Rate

FUE transplants have a 90-95 percent hair graft survival rate compared to the approximately 75 percent survival rate of the older Follicular Unit Transplant method. The precision harvesting of FUE using the ARTAS System minimizes trauma or transection of the hair follicles during the extraction process.
