Comparing ‘Strip Donor’ to ‘Follicular Unit Extraction’ Techniques

We are pleased to offer two highly effective hair transplant procedures:  The Strip Donor Procedure, and Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT).  Both procedures are highly effective in creating a fuller, natural looking head of hair for both men and women.  We are also pleased to offer the latest technologies and transplant techniques, ensuring the best possible outcome for our patients.  Two examples of hair transplant techniques you will not find anywhere else include:

  • Mesotherapy:  Incorporating mesotherapy with hair transplantation provides at least 2 unique benefits that increase the effectiveness of the procedure.  First, it penetrates the hair follicle to a greater degree compared to other topical applications.  Second, mesotherapy avoids the systematic side effects commonly associated with some oral medications.  The injections are very superficial and are administered with the use of vibration devices developed by our physicians to create a virtually painless experience.
  • Follicular Isolation (FIT) Technique:  Follicular Isolation Technique was co-created by the Hair Transplant Institutes’ very own Dr. Paul Rose.  Dr. Rose developed FIT to enhance the effectiveness of Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT) hair transplantation procedure.  Below, in the section titled Choosing a Hair Transplant Procedure, we will further examine the role of FIT in the FUT procedure, as well as how the FUT procedure compares to Strip Donor procedure.

Hair Loss Evaluation

Prior to engaging in a hair transplant procedure, a surgeon at the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami will conduct a thorough hair loss evaluation to determine the cause of your current condition and the most effective means of treatment.  Each patient is approached as a truly unique case, and we strive to build a positive, caring, and understanding rapport with each patient.  To learn more about the tests we conduct during our evaluation process, including the early-detection genetic testing, please visit our Hair Loss Evaluation page.  Or, you may contact our practice directly at 305.925.0222 to speak with a friendly member of our team who will be happy to assist in scheduling an evaluation.

Choosing a Hair Transplant Procedure

Hair transplant procedures come in two basic varieties:  The Strip Donor Procedure and the Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT) Procedure.  FUT may also be referred to as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).  Prospective patients are invited to use the outline below to compare each procedure:

Strip Donor Procedure

  • Less time consuming:  A large number of grafts is able to be harvested and transplanted in a short time.
  • Increased survivability:  Strip Donor Procedure inflicts negligible damage to individual grafts, increasing the rate of survival among each.
  • Lower Cost:  Strip Donor typically costs less than the FUT Procedure.
  • Keep your hair:  Unlike the FUT Procedure, the Strip Donor Procedure does not require the patient to shave their head prior to treatment.
  • Minimal scarring:  Multiple sessions can often be performed using the same scar.

  • Results in a linear scar:  Unlike FUT Procedure, Strip Donor Procedure creates a linear scar as a result of the “ledge closure” portion of treatment.  Though scarring is minimal and nearly undetectable, Dr. Rose has developed an advanced technique to overcome the issue.  Using his “ledge” trichophytic closure technique, Dr. Rose is able to direct hair to grow through the line of the scar to minimize its appearance even further.

Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT) Procedure

  • No linear scarring:  With FUT, there is no linear scarring.  Instead, individual hair follicles are extracted using Follicular Isolation Technique (FIT), a special procedure co-created by our very own Dr. Rose.
  • Wear your hair shorter:  With FUT, patients are able to wear their hair shorter than patients who have a Strip Donor Procedure performed.

  • Must shave your head:  Prior to the FUT procedure, the patient must shave their head to enable the extraction of individual follicular units.
  • No survivability data available:  Because FUT is such a new procedure, there is no survivability data available.  At the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami, we couple hair transplant procedures with advanced mesotherapy tecnhiques and platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections to ensure patients have the greatest chance of survivability possible.
  • Thinning of donor area:  Following a FUT procedure, the “donor” area from which individual follicular units are obtained may be appear thin depending on the number of units that are extracted.
  • Shaving head will reveal minimal scarring:  Should the patient choose to shave their head at some point after the FUT procedure, scars will appear as tiny red dots.
  • More expensive
  • Fewer grafts:  A lower number of grafts can be obtained in one seession.  Multiple surgical days are required for a larger graft (usually exceeding 1500).
