Everything You Need To Know About No-Shave FUE

The development and adoption of the follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique in 2004 and the introduction of the advanced ARTAS System shortly thereafter were sea changes in hair transplant surgery. One of the many advantages of FUE over older hair transplant methods, in addition to unmatched precision and shorter recovery times, was that it caused minimal scarring, reducing visible evidence that a patient had a hair transplant procedure.

Now, FUE has taken another leap forward that makes it even harder to detect that a transplant was performed while still delivering exceptional results: No-shave FUE.

Concealment and Camouflage

As the name implies, this approach eliminates the need to shave the head in order to obtain donor hairs. In an FUE procedure, the surgeon precisely moves selected follicular units from the donor area with an image-guided 0.8-1-millimeter circular tool in a scattered pattern.

Until quite recently, however, extraction of donor hairs in FUE procedures required that the area be shaven to approximately 1/25th of an inch so the surgeon could identify and extract the follicular units to be targeted for transplantation.

With no-shave FUE, the surgeon only needs to trim the donor follicle hairs that they plan to transplant. The trimmed donor follicles are therefore hidden and blend in amidst the surrounding full-length hair, resulting in a completely normal appearance of the donor area after surgery.

Additionally, in the recipient area, the non-shaved natural hairs in the recipient area will help hide the transplanted follicular units. As the newly transplanted grafts grow, they blend in with the existing hairs, thickening the area and providing more density to the scalp.

While no-shave FUE surgery effectively and quickly camouflages the fact that a patient had hair transplant surgery, the procedure itself may take more time. That is because it is more technically challenging and labor-intensive. In such a surgery, it is therefore even more critical that your hair transplant surgeon has the skill, precision, and experience to ensure optimal results.

Miami Hair Institute’s Dr. Rose was one of the pioneers and developers of the FUE technique. Both Dr. Rose and Dr. Nusbaum have performed the procedure on thousands of patients since 2004 with exceptional results.
