Hair transplant surgery performed by a skilled and experienced medical professional is a safe and effective way to address hair loss and restore hair to a full, natural-looking state. The benefits of a hair transplant manifest themselves in many ways: improved appearance, increased self-confidence, and the satisfaction that comes from having taken action to enhance your overall well-being. But a recent study suggests that the benefits of a hair transplant may extend far below the surface of the scalp to relieve a much more serious and debilitating problem: migraine headaches.
Anyone who suffers from migraines understands how disruptive and painful they can be. These piercing headaches can severely diminish the quality of life and productivity, and cause sufferers to incur significant treatment costs. Millions of people worldwide experience migraines on a regular basis, with women making up three of every four cases.
Effective treatments have been elusive, though surgery has been found to be increasingly effective. The new study, published in late 2017 in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, looked specifically at the impact that hair transplant surgery had on patients who were afflicted with regular migraine headaches. As the researchers put in their report, “the postoperative improvement each patient experienced was dramatic.”
Researchers from the SO-EP Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery Clinic in Turkey studied six patients who suffered from migraines and underwent hair transplants between January 2011 and May 2012. These patients, all of whom had tried pain-relieving medication with no success, experienced migraines for six days a month on average, with the pain lasting around four hours. They rated their pain between five and eight on a scale of 1-10.
After hair transplantation, each migraine sufferer was checked once in the first month and then once every 3 months. Migraine headaches had ceased in all six patients, none of whom used medical treatments for migraines thereafter.
While the researchers noted that “the seemingly curative effect of hair transplantation on migraine headaches has no clear explanation as yet,” the conclusion that such surgery can diminish or even eliminate migraines was unavoidable.
“Results were decisive in these few patients. It is remarkable that both an alopecia and migraine headache may be easily remedied through a simple and easily applied procedure,” the report states.
