Hair loss is a year-round problem for many people, but summertime can make this troublesome issue even worse. The high temperatures, humidity, and intense sunshine that are unescapable parts of a South Florida summer can accelerate hair loss. In the middle of summer, hair follicles enter a resting phase, or “telogen” state, more frequently that they do the rest of the year. This is especially true for women. Summer’s extreme temperatures can result in over 70% of hair follicles entering this resting phase, which in turn can lead to shedding at a clip faster than the average loss of between 50-100 follicles a day.
Luckily, there are some simple steps you can take to strengthen your hair follicles and control your rate of hair loss during the warm summer months; steps which will keep your hair healthy through Labor Day and beyond.
Hydrate. You already know that you need to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water during the summer (and throughout the year, in fact). Staying hydrated is not only vital for your overall health during hot temperatures, it is essential for your hair as well. Along with skin, hair is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of water, vitamin, and mineral deficiency. Hair shafts are made up of approximately 25 percent water, and lack of moisture causes the shaft to weaken. Make a conscious effort to push fluids throughout the summer – at least 64 ounces of water per day – to keep your thirsty hair from drying out.
Switch to a milder shampoo. Although sweating might prompt you to wash your hair more frequently, stick to an every-other-day routine at most and try to avoid harsh, chemical or fragrance-laden shampoos. Switch to mild, organic shampoos; even baby shampoo is a great alternative during the summer.
Healthy summer diet. To stop and prevent hair loss, be sure to maintain a well-rounded diet rich in protein, biotin, vitamin E, vitamin A, and other important nutrients. Summertime is a naturally good time to load up your shopping cart with lighter, moisture and nutrient-rich foods that can provide your follicles with the ingredients they need. Consider these seven light, summery foods to keep your hair strong and shiny.
