Seborrheic dermatitis
Definition: Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition characterized by red, flaky patches and greasy scales, often on the scalp (dandruff) but also affecting other oily areas like the eyebrows, face, chest, and back.
Causes: The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown, but contributing factors may include:
Malassezia yeast: This yeast naturally lives on the scalp and feeds on sebum (oil) produced by the sebaceous glands. In some individuals, an overgrowth of this yeast can trigger inflammation and flaking.
Genetics: A predisposition to develop seborrheic dermatitis can run in families.
Medical conditions: Parkinson’s disease, HIV/AIDS, or other conditions that weaken the immune system can increase the risk of seborrheic dermatitis.
Stress: While not a direct cause, stress may worsen symptoms in some people.
Signs and Symptoms:
Red, greasy patches of skin with white or yellowish flakes (dandruff on the scalp)
Itching or burning sensation in affected areas
Scaly patches around the eyebrows, nose, or behind the ears
